Wycar Groundworks Team

Wycar’s Groundworks Team have been working hard over the past six months in the development of the Bilsthorpe grounds. The poly tunnel and allotment already have wonderful organic fresh vegetables growing and Service Users are now looking forward to tasting the fruits of all their hard work after looking and maintaining the allotment over the past months.

A new work placement has begun at Bilsthorpe which will provide the opportunity for our Service Users to run and manage, with the support of their care teams and activity department, a canteen type enterprise which will provide hot and cold drinks and healthy snacks for anyone wishing to visit the grounds.

Service Users who chose to be involved in the project and its development came up with some great names to call the Kabin but it was Alan Davies of The Mews who came up with the name of “ROCK CAFE” which was chosen in the end after some serious deliberating by our Operations Director Joy Talbot.

The official opening of the Rock Cafe went ahead on the 22nd June with Wycar Leys Operations Director Joy Talbot doing the honours, also in attendance were some of the Service Users who are wishing to be actively involved in the running of the new placement and College tutor Gary who has been delivering a Health and Safety in the Workplace programme for our Service Users over the past eight weeks.

Music for Health workshops

Music for Health workshops, run in many areas of the UK, were developed to enhance the lives of people in residential care. Anne and David (the local directors for Music for Health) have worked for many years in supporting people with various needs so joining the Music for Health family seemed a natural progression.

Grand Opening Day

The first workshop for Wycar Leys was held at our Homestead and Cottage homes in Bulwell in April 2009. At the end of April Music for Health workshops were introduced to all our homes in Bilsthorpe. Anne and David have seen quite a number of changes in the Service Users who have been able to attend regularly: a gain in confidence, a development in rhythm and creativity to the music, greater social interaction and expressions of pleasure.

David and Anne said:

“Workshops at Wycar Leys are amazing for us. We gain as much joy from the workshops as the Service Users who attend them. Service Users leave the workshops with smiles on their faces and many say that they look forward to the next session."

WYCAR LEYS ARCHERS!

The recent introduction of an Archery activity which is available to all Service Users at Wycar Leys has been really positive. There are two sessions currently running each month and they are supported by the local Sherwood Archer’s instructors based in nearby Southwell. The sessions that have been held so far have had an amazing impact with many of our Service Users.

Neighbouring homes and day centres alike are invited and join us in accessing our grounds and enjoying the Archery sessions. There are also refreshments available at our newly opened Service User run Kabin enterprise, “ROCK CAFÉ”

It is a wonderful excuse for our Service Users to meet up with friends, share a great activity and catch up on the gossip!!
