People with Learning Disabilities face many obstacles when fully participating in society. Our aim is to ensure Service Users gain maximum opportunities in life chances through education, work placements and leisure activities, whilst ensuring continuity of care, support and equality of opportunity for all Service Users is maintained.
We achieve this by ensuring Service Users have an activity schedule tailor-made to suit their requirements. Prior to creating any activity schedule, the Activities Manager will arrange individual meetings with Service Users to discuss their hobbies, interests and goals, giving them as much choice and control as possible over their chosen activities and type of service and support they require.
People with Learning Disabilities should be fully involved when decisions are made which affect their lives and this includes day-to-day matters like choice of activities. Our service provision is tailor-made for each individual Service User, involving them wherever possible and providing Service Users with a "needs led service": we adapt the environment in order to meet their individual needs. We do this by undertaking a comprehensive assessment of risk, person centered planning and taking into account Service User’s wishes and aspirations.
We provide full support for those Service Users who have communication difficulties. We privately contract with local specialist Speech and Language Therapists who assess and provide Service Users with assistive communication technologies, enabling them to make choices, increase their independence, and give them more control over their lives.
Being part of mainstream services is something we take for granted. We go to work, meet our family and friends, go out to restaurants, use transport, go to the cinema, etc, but too many people with Learning Disabilities still have very limited opportunities and poor life chances. We want to change this by providing them with the same opportunities to access mainstream services, and be as much a part of the local community as people without a Learning Disability, enabling them to lead full and active lives.
The Government’s “Valuing People” document indicates that very few people with Learning Disabilities - probably fewer than 10% - have jobs. Our aim is to provide opportunities and enable Service Users to experience suitable work in a variety of fields. We believe that employment is an important route to social inclusion, and those who wish to work should have the opportunities and support to do so.
We organise and arrange work placements within monitored environments for Service Users who are able to undertake employment. These placements might be supported or unsupported and will assist them to gain work experience and provide a variety of courses, such as acceptable behaviour in the work place, personal appearance, food hygiene, communication skills, and many more.
