The Mews is a specialist residential home for ten adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities, autism and associated complex needs. A late 18th century refurbished farm building with its own private garden and barbeque area, it is one of the four homes situated within the five acres of the Wycar Leys complex at Bilsthorpe.
The home is spacious with a few steps between several levels. There is a kitchen and dining area and two main lounges, one with a television and the second - by request of the Service Users - with a music system. There is a third small lounge/study area with sofa, computer and arts and crafts equipment.
The Mews has ten single bedrooms, all of which have washing/shaving facilities and all of which are decorated in accordance with the Service User’s choices. There are two bathrooms, both with toilet facilities, two shower rooms and two single toilets, all of which are individually decorated to make them feel homely.
The home environment, including the furnishing, fixtures and fittings within The Mews, has been specially adapted to meet the individual and unique requirements of the people who live within the home.
The Mews Service Users are actively encouraged to take a lead in the day-to-day running of their home, being involved in all decisions from the employment of staff to where to go on holiday. They help plan their own weekly activity schedule, being encouraged to exercise their choices and become involved in a variety of interesting, stimulating and fulfilling activities. The home has its own people carrier.
Within the garden is a seating and smoking area built by the care team and Service Users, who also care for and maintain their own garden area. They assist with menu planning, the shopping and preparation of their own meals and, as well as the location of their annual holiday, they choose the staff they want to support them whilst they’re away.
Care is provided by a highly motivated and caring team of staff within a relaxed and friendly environment. The care packages are tailored around the specific needs of each individual.
The Mews provides its care team with training to enable them to gain the knowledge and understanding they require to support the Service Uses for whom they care. The training includes not only internal mandatory training (Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults, learning disabilities, first aid, health and safety, fire safety, infection control, COSHH, medication awareness and knowledge, moving and handling, and the skills common induction pack) but also external training in NVQs levels II and III, which all staff have either completed or are in the process of completing or enrolling. The care team also receives specific training in the management of violence and aggression (MAPPA - the course facilitator is Positive Options) and any training to meet the specific needs of the home or a Service User is sought and arranged.
Tracy Tucker, the Home Manager, has been with the company since February 2001.
