The House is one of four homes situated within the five acres of the Wycar Leys complex at Bilsthorpe. It is a two storey detached property that stands within its own garden and has views overlooking open countryside. It offers specialist care for up to eight Service Users who have a severe learning disability, autism and complex needs.
The home is furnished to create a comfortable and homely atmosphere and offers a safe, secure environment. The accommodation is spacious and the furniture robust, the living environment having been adapted to reduce the risks presented by challenging behaviour. The living space consists of a kitchen with dining area, a lounge and a music room. The first floor has eight bedrooms which are decorated to the individual choice of each Service User.
The garden is spacious and has adult sized swings, a barbecue area and a separate arts and crafts room with ball pool. The garden is securely fenced around and the Service Users are free to access it whenever they wish. The home has its own people carrier for outings.
The care we provide is focused on supporting people according to their needs to enable them to reach their maximum potential and live a fulfilling life. Every Service User is seen as an individual and every Service User has their own person-centred plan tailor-made to meet their individual needs.
The House provides care for eight Service Users, some of whom have limited communication skills. The staff and management team have developed areas within The House to help with communication, such as pictorial menu boards and Makaton/pictures posted on doors. This development will continue to evolve, ultimately enabling Service Users with communication difficulties to lead an easier and more enjoyable life by relieving some of the stresses caused by communication problems.
Our Approach
The foundation of our approach within The House is based upon the ‘Essential Standards of Quality and Safety’. Following these essential guidelines ensures that Service Users in The House are cared for in an individual and extremely person-centred way. It also ensures that the care being delivered by the staff team is consistent in its approach and promotes freedom of choice.
The Service Users who live within The House all have comprehensive Support Plans that are person-centred to meet their individual needs. Fundamental to these Support Plans are each individual’s choices and social inclusion. The Support Plans are extremely flexible and are regularly reviewed by management and the care staff supporting the Service Users. This helps to ensure that Service Users’ wants and wishes with regard to their care delivery, which may change over time, are at the centre of everything we do on a daily basis.
Our Support Staff
The House has high staffing ratios, as determined by the assessed needs of the Service Users who live with us. Our commitment to ongoing training and development aims to provide an experienced, well balanced team dedicated to high quality care.
The training and development programmes include all team members and it is expected that all staff will achieve an NVQ qualification in care. In addition, we provide training in autism, first aid, COSHH, fire training, health and safety and behaviour management.
All employees undergo a robust recruitment process and must have a minimum of two satisfactory references and an acceptable Enhanced Disclosure Check from the Criminal Records Bureau prior to an offer of employment being made.
Upon joining the staff team in The House, all new employees complete a thorough induction process, which includes familiarisation with each Service User’s Personal Care Plan as well as an understanding of all Wycar Leys’ policies and procedures.
Each member of the care team is committed to ensuring that they provide the Service Users with the opportunities they want, as well as help develop those skills that will assist each Service User to make the most of their choices. In every case, they will seek to help Service Users integrate into the local and wider community, enabling them to meet new people and maintain relationships.
