River Lodge Lounge

River Lodge is situated in Burton-on-Trent and is a specialist residential home which has been specifically designed to accommodate the needs of eight Service Users with Prader Willi Syndrome. Each of the single bedrooms has an en suite shower room and is decorated and personalised in accordance with the wishes of the Service User. The environment promotes Service User privacy and safety, is extremely spacious and has been developed with the guidance of the Prader Willi Syndrome Association.

At River Lodge we provide specialist care which includes:

  • qualified staff who are trained to understand the complexities involved in supporting people with Prader Willi Syndrome, including food intake, risks associated with food and its availability, social, physical, emotional and recreational needs and complex challenging behaviours
  • a motivated staff team trained in the management of Prader Willi Syndrome and dedicated to promoting Service User inclusion and participation in all aspects of life
  • supporting each Service User to follow a healthy eating plan which aids weight loss and reduces the risk of common health problems, such as sleep apnoea and diabetes
  • a care approach based upon each individual’s low arousal person-centred behavioural support plan
  • regular review and analysis of behavioural support records to improve social awareness and minimise the frequency of incidents of challenging behaviour
  • actively encouraging each Service User to be involved in running their home, using positive approaches to improve confidence and mobility and listening to their ideas and feedback
  • when required, completing a Mental Capacity Assessment and Best Interest documents, ensuring that we follow a multi professional approach. (Deprivation of Liberty safeguards are also taken into consideration and, when required, referrals are made).
  • ongoing liaison with the Prader Willi Syndrome Association to ensure that our knowledge remains up to date.

We involve Service Users in all aspects of decision-making when assessing their needs, including preparation of their individual person-centred support plan and risk assessments. This involvement helps us to encourage our Service Users to take everyday risks and develop their individual life skills, better enabling them to reach their full potential and achieve their aspirations.

We provide stimulating activities within the home environment but also support our Service Users to be actively involved in the community, accessing meaningful person-centred activities. The home has its own people carrier.
