The Quays is a large Victorian property which provides spacious living accommodation for six young people with learning disabilities and complex needs who are making the journey into adulthood. The home is situated on a quiet tree-lined avenue on the outskirts of Doncaster but within walking distance of the town centre and local amenities.
Communal space comprises a lounge, dining room and kitchen split into two separate areas. There is a large enclosed garden to the rear which can be accessed at any time. All bedrooms have en suite facilities with a bath, shower or wet room and everyone can choose how they wish their own room to be decorated.
The home is about ten minutes’ walk from the town centre and the Frenchgate Centre, which includes shops, food outlets and other attractions. Also within walking distance or a short bus ride (we also have our own people carrier) are Doncaster Racecourse, the Lakeside shopping complex and the Dome Leisure Complex which has a ten-pin bowling alley, multiplex cinema, ice rink and swimming pools.
Our Aim
We aim to promote a pathway for young people who are making the journey into adulthood with a learning disability and complex needs, ensuring their choices, rights, inclusion and independence are promoted at all times.
We aim to make the transitional journey for the young people who live with us as easy and enjoyable as possible as they move into adult life.
Each individual has a person-centred plan which takes into account the young person’s wishes, including:
- their hopes and aspirations for the future and how they can be met
- information and advice they require to be able to make choices and positive decisions about their future
- supporting the young person to develop personal and social skills within an adult lifestyle
- facilitating the use of leisure and recreational facilities, including meaningful occupation such as work placements and college placements
- empowering and supporting the young person to have a valued role within the community
- working closely with family and other professionals to help the young person reach their full potential as they develop into adulthood.
Our Commitment
At The Quays we are committed to:
- providing the best service and striving to make it better
- embracing equality and valuing difference
- being open, honest and fair whilst being polite and supportive
- recognising our successes and learning from any mistakes
- putting Service Users first and adopting a ‘can do’ approach.
Each member of the care team is trained to a high standard, with many having years of experience. All staff undergo a comprehensive induction and mandatory training covering a variety of areas and all either hold or are studying for an NVQ Level II or III qualification.
Sally Hamilton, the Home Manager, has been with the company since January 2002 and, like all the care team, embraces the principles of ‘Valuing People Now’ and the ‘Valuing People Now Delivery Plan 2010-2011: making it happen for everyone’.
